YSA holds ministerial dialogue with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan
The post-independence generation Singaporeans has been, in the recent times, the focus of the Singapore government. And a series of dialogue sessions have been held to seek their views on shaping the state’s future.
YSA took the opportunity to organise the YSA Ministerial Dialogue for young Sikhs to engage Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, on “Creating Our Future: Changing Perspectives, Changing Mindsets” on 20 November 2004 at Grand Plaza Park Royal Hotel.
Close to 40 young participants from the Sikh community took part in a frank and lively exchange of views and opinions with Dr Vivian on diverse range of issues such as the young and a sense of belonging, the OB markers, excessive focus on the post-independence generation, equal opportunities for all ethnic groups and migration.
The aim of the session was for young Sikhs to provide feedback on what they hope to see and how they would like to be involved in the shaping of Singapore’s future. At the same time, it provided an opportunity for the Sikh community to understand the plans and policies of the government to engage and involve the post-independence generation Sikhs in this process.
The event was supported by the Lee Foundation and a Youth Development Fund grant from the National Youth Council.
