It was, indeed, an occasion to honour volunteerism and selfless service.
The YSA orgnanised a certificate presentation ceremony for the 19 young Singaporeans who had spent their December holidays in a selfless mission of charity in aid of school children in the village of Dhembru Khurd in Moga district, Punjab.
Held at the National Library on 15 March 2007, more than 70 members attended the ceremony.
The guest-of-honour, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, Parliamentary Secretary for National Development, commending the participants in his address, stated: “They learnt about socio-economic development while serving the community. I am sure that this will, in turn, bring them closer to understanding Singapore’s development issues. Also, while making a difference to a community, they have acquired or honed personal and group skills such as confidence, teamwork and leadership. Through it all, I hope they have discovered, in themselves, the ability to contribute to society, making them active citizens, whether in Singapore or abroad.”
Besides presentation of certificates, there was a multi-media presentation on the project Two of the team members recounted their personal experiences during the project. The ceremony was followed by a dinner reception.
YSA will lead its seventh community service expedition to Punjab, India, in December 2007.
