YSA members take to the streets to raise funds for Iran earthquake victims
It was a truly Singaporean effort! Representing different ethnic groups, professions and backgrounds, close to 40 members of Young Sikh Association (Singapore) and their families spent their Sunday on 25 January 2004, helping to raise funds for the victims of the Iran earthquake, which took place in December 2003, killing more than 30,000 people and affecting over 40,000 families.
As part of a joint-fundraising effort by YSA and its partners, Mercy Relief, Singapore Red Cross Society, the Inter-Religious Organisation, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, the Singapore Catholic Archdiocese, the Singapore Soka Association and the Iranian community in Singapore, the island wide collection saw YSA members walking the streets, spreading out to various areas of the island with a donation can in their hands. It rained and it shined, but they continued with their noble cause, through shifts, throughout the day.
The collection effort complemented the direct appeal made by YSA for donations earlier in the month. The funds raised would be forwarded to Mercy Relief and would be sent to the earthquake victims in Bam through the Singapore Red Cross Society.
These volunteer fundraisers have indeed shown that human relationships have no boundaries. They cared and they showed it by tirelessly participating in the street collection.
