Singapore Sikh community raises funds for regional disaster victims

The Singapore Sikh community came together, to raise more than S$20,000 for the victims of tropical storm Ketsana and the Padang earthquake. The fundraising effort was spearheaded by YSA, seven Sikh temples and five Sikh organisations.

Mr Inderjit Singh, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC and Advisor to the Sikh Welfare Council, presented the cheque to Dr Fatimah Lateef, Director of Mercy Relief, on 21 October 2009.

Mr Singh stated that, “We are deeply saddened by the calamities that have rocked our neighbouring communities. We share the grief of the people of the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia. We trust that this humble contribution, through Mercy Relief, will help feed the hungry and place some children back in school.”

Dr Fatimah added, “Contributions like this show the prevalence of solidarity amongst the local community; that people are sitting up, listening and doing something about the incidence of natural disasters and the impact it has on humanity, regardless of race or nationality. We appreciate the efforts of the Sikh community, and their donations will help boost the scale of our engagements at the stricken areas.”
